Bruce doesn't get it, which is actually funny, given his relationship with Gotham. He can understand Clark Kent's love for the farm, his family, Smallville. The people he interviews and the places he's been. He doesn't quite understand or accept the way Clark feels about all of it.
The first time Clark had looked at the world from above, he almost thought he was dying. The lack of oxygen or the exertion or something, but it felt like his heart was going to explode out of his chest, and he didn't care, it didn't matter as long as he could look down on it. The layers that made up the sky, the ground, the people, the seas. Flocks of birds and swarms of fish and the lights of the cities like gaudy constellations and he'd fallen in love.
The same feeling he'd get, years later, looking at Lois when she leaned back from the computer, cup of coffee in her hand, explaining why his theory was stupid, no really Smallville, and let her explain why... And he'd smiled at her, throwing her off, but he couldn't stop, because he realised that he loved her, had fallen (head over heels, tumbling through the air, coup de foudre, thunderbolt) in love with her. That it had been the case for a while and he just hadn't noticed. The feeling was intense enough to almost qualify as pain, or at least the kind of sensory overload Clark had too much experience of growing up.
"Will you be much longer?" J'onn says, his mental voice picking up the flat, metallic tang it does when he is being particularly alien. If Clark turned around, he knows J'onn's head would be elongated, his exoskeleton obvious. Bruce thinks that Clark's alien nature prevents him feeling this kind of love, this kind of love for Earth, but Clark wonders if he could love her half as much if he wasn't apart from it, as well as a part *of* it. "Other" and "Half".
"Just a couple minutes more," Clark says. J'onn's mind gives a faint, buzzing hiss, the martian equivalent of a sigh and Clark lets his vision wander. Lets it go travelling through atoms, molecules and wavelengths that are perculiar to Earth, trees and a field of grass and clover, a bickering family the Charysh valley, two polecat cubs playing in the Gobi desert. His wife, frowning over a newspaper headline. If he went further down, he knows he could hear her heartbeat, the sound of crickets in his parents' fields, whistling ducks in Australia. All of it, the people, the land, the sea, the way the sky looks when you're lying on your back in a field in New Zealand, or the way the air tastes in Metropolis...
He can feel his face stretch out in smile and knows he'd be laughing out loud if he was in atmosphere.

By the way, typo:
Let's it go travelling through atoms,
The apostrophe doesn't belong.

Date: 2006-01-07 07:13 am (UTC)Bruce doesn't get it, which is actually funny, given his relationship with Gotham.
The thing about Bruce is, for all that he's a Gothamite, he's at heart the true small-town guy with small-town perceptions, vs. Clark, who despite his Smallville roots turned out to be the man with the larger world-view -- as you have so beautifully captured here. Think about it! For Bruce, it's all about this town that he's the biggest fish in, the town that for all its size, he has knowledge of every tiny bit of it, every nook & cranny, and gets personal and up-close with every creep, thug, and stoolie. It's canon that Dick gets pissed off at Bruce and runs away from home to become Nightwing in Bludhaven, and to Bruce, it's as if he's fallen off the map, and yet you can spit in Gotham and hit Bludhaven, it's so close. But it's not Gotham, so he might as well be in outer Mongolia in Bruce's eyes! Now that I think of it, Tim also got some distance from Bruce by running away to Bludhaven recently. Bruce has frowned on each of the Robins getting involved with the Teen Titans because it took away time from protecting Gotham, for similar reasons he'd rather keep an eye on his town as opposed to reporting on a daily basis to the Justice League... and yet with both groups, planet-saving crime-stoppage is going on vs. stopping a mugger on a street corner. It's really funny when you think about it, Bruce as a small-town guy.
