Superman Returns is a film of such love and gorgeous, gorgeous cinamatography. It is even better when seen in a group of people who also love it, who can understand you when you go "!!!" I saw it in the excellent company of (and I think I've got the ljs right),
violet_doll,
kabukivice,
blythely,
derryderrydown,
jayest,
mskatej and
circe_tigana. Once again, my theory that cool on the internet = cool in real life was proven correct.*
Well, she's not as terrible as I feared-- I get the impression she watched a lot of Margot Kidder's Lois Lane, because that comes off a lot at the beginning. Not so much as the movie goes on, but eh. Not who I picture, but serviceable. Problem is, a lot of the other actors are just better than that- Brandon Roth's Clark and Superman is a tribute to Christopher Reeve, but works well as his own thing as well, Kevin Spacey is obviously having a lot of fun with Lex Luthor, which again, is as it should be, James Marsden's Richard is pretty good, for the obligatory Good Husband Material (Who Will Be Jilted For The Hero) type. The side-characters, Jimmy, Kitty, the henchmen, all work well.
Also, they got several points that work for me, like Superman's sense, and how alien they make him, even when they connect him to so much of the earth. How a large part of what he does, why he does it, is to inspire others. Lois is an excellent reporter. Also, Richard was a good man, and ordinary-human heroic, which is nice to see.
Incidentally,
kabukivice, if you want to meet up so I can hand over Shall We Dance, let me know when and where is good for you.
*Please note that definition of cool may be highly subjective.
