Varient can be found here

Experiment 13 grabs him, and it takes Timmy Six a moment to relax into the hug. The kid loosens his grip, but doesn’t quite let go and Timmy doesn't point out that the kids got him floating about a foot above the ground.

"Timmy," he says. "Dude, you look-- who dresses you, your mother? 'Cause I gotta tell you, test-tubes and lab techs don't have the best dress sense." His voice sounds different, accent and pitch and he doesn’t even smell the same.

"You look different," Timmy says. Gives the kid a half-smile. "So who's dressing you?"

"I can manage that by myself these days." A non-answer made with enough humour that it might not even have been deliberate. He puts Timmy down and looks at him. "How are things back at Cadmus?"

"Busy. Different. Two's the interim head." He gives a wry smile, watches the way it makes Kon smile back. He hasn't changed that much. "He took over after Westfield was pushed out for certain severe mistakes."

"I was one of them, huh?" Said with genuine humour, and it's just slightly off. Or not off, different. Outside influences, or maybe just the kid growing up.

"Your demise, though greatly exaggerated, did bring some of his more… What's the word? *Whacked out* decisions to light."

"It's so weird hearing you say something like 'whacked out,'" the kid says.

Timmy raises an eyebrow, and wonders which "you" that was.

Notes: Okay, so the ending of varient was subject to a little intepretation. [livejournal.com profile] marici wanted omething with the Tims finding Kon again outside, so this sequel is based on that.

YMMV

Yummy. This is the ending I wanted to believe in, so now you've given that belief a little bit of support. Thanks.

Thank you thank you! I am a blind optimist believer in Kon's escape, and I love wisecracking Timmy, so glad just to see him again. I also ought to mention how much the indirect emotion description here and in Variant just /do/ it for me. Timmy's happiness I could see when he didn't remind Kon to put him down, obsessive recording from Five, Kon's cute fondness of being manipulated anytime he catches the Tims at it. Thank you with ice cream and cherries on top.

You're welcome!
I'm glad the indirectness and ambiguity worked for you.

Yay, he got away! Can I be greedy and request more, too?

Sorry, you missed the boat on that one. That said, I do drabblememes fairly frequently, so you might get lucky on the next one.
