Music I grew up on
Sep. 6th, 2005 12:11 amSo, I get a lot of my music from my dad -my foundation music, before I even got music from my peers and TV. Stuff like this is part of it. Released a couple of years before I was gone, and recently purchased by me for my dad on CD. It's a bit hard to take his records in the car. I’m feeling a little nostalgic, so…
This is the protest rock of apocalypse-is-just-around-the-corner, the government-are-all-bastards, left-wing anger.
Tom Robinson Band, Power In The Darkness
Up Against The Wall
( Darkhaired dangerous schoolkids Vicious, suspicious sixteen Jet-black blazers at the bus stop Sullen, unhealthy and mean )
You Gotta Survive
( Carrion crows on the motorway Old woman dying of the plague She cried 'put me out of my misery' Charlie had to give her his blade )
One of my favourite post-apocalypse songs
Man You Never Saw
( Don't repeat this conversation Don't let on we've met before Try and make like I'm a stranger I'm a man you never saw )
My dad, when he was at uni, had a flatmate who was on a government list. he'd get all his mail opened before it was delivered, and some bits wouldn't get delivered at all, and he always tells me this whenever he listens to this song.
Ain't Gonna Take It
( I'm a middle-class kiddie, but I know where I stand... )
Long Hot Summer
( All this heat, Out on the street, Telling us to move along It's gonna be a long, hot summer from now on. )
Winter of '79
( All you kids that just sit and whine You should have been there back in '79 )
It amuses me that Spurs beating Arsenal (football) is considered one of the signs of the collapse of civilisation. Or possibly I'm just reading too much in to this
2-4-6-8 Motorway
( Ain't no use setting off with a bad companion. )
Let me know if any of the links aren't working and I'll sort it out in the morning. Cultural notes are available on request.
