I don't have a lot of toys from my childhood with me here in Finland, just a few stuffed toys that were made by my mom. This doll is the first thing my mom made for me: a Cabbage Patch replacement. (I wanted a Cabbage Patch as a toddler, but my mom made me this doll instead, which was even better - she was so beautiful to me, and my mom hand painted her eyes!) This doll has been lying flopped over in a basket on top of a bookshelf for a few years, and she caught my eye as I was going to bed one day a few weeks ago and I started thinking that it's a pity that a work of art that my mom worked so hard to make isn't being played with.

It's possible there will be a toddler in the family I could give her to in the next few years. But in the meantime I felt sad about her, dusty and poorly dressed, so I examined her and knitted her a little outfit.

The doll needs washed as well, but I want to wait for summer. Her body is light pink cotton that has gotten rather grimy, but her face isn't machine washable. My mom says I can take off her head and wash the body in the washing machine; and I wouldn't want to do that until it's warm outside, and sunny, so it would dry as quickly as possible. The face definitely needs washed too, so I'm going to have to try to spot wash it.

All three of these wee garments took me only about 6 days to make, and they're made of leftover scraps (the striped shirt and the yellow cardigan) and a bit of cheap sock yarn (the jungle green pants). But I got that feeling of excited accomplishment with a finished project three times! They have the details of bigger garments, and they're so cute and tiny, even more so than making sweaters for small children.

Somewhere that's green

I wore green by accident today and didn't remember the day until I went out and saw other folks in green. My grandmother, who's no longer with us, gave this to me years ago.

How they did this is just very pleasing to me somehow. The bit of whimsy is especially appreciated by me in an area that's very paved over, with very little greenery or growing stuff. (My neighborhood has more trees and grass than this one.)

Something small but rattling came to me today. I've been taking photos of the vary large and very thick statue at the Jaquillard & Strunck site in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery for nearly 20 years. See? It towers over me and I never take close-ups of its face.

While looking at the larger version of one of my recent photos I noticed a long prominent scratch above and to the side of its mouth. photo )

I had no idea that was there! When I looked at other photos of it in recent years at that magnification, that mark was there. So I went back to some older and far less high-definition photos and saw what might be an indication of it in 2010 and possibly 2008, but the photos weren't close and are a bit squidgy looking at higher magnifications. This... actually bothers me! I had no idea that was there. I have no idea how or when it occurred. Just... weird.

Wax informed me that it was definitely coming out too small and would need to be started over, so this morning I spent several hours unraveling it after I finished weaving in the ends on the Bumblebee Breton (#2).

The three skeins rolled together into one yarn ball are the size of a baby's head, according to Wax. (Close enough I guess.)

Urban-Corraro monument (figure) 3-9-26After barely going anywhere or shooting anything for almost two months due to snow, severe cold, and feeling crappy, I started photographing again this week. I have some morning light cemetery shots and started putting up some daytime window display shots from when I was in the city for a doctor's appointment. The ones I just posted are all warm weather clothing while it was literally snowing and sleeting on me. (With the wind, I couldn't shoot and hold an umbrella simultaneously, so it was literally snowing and sleeting on me. It took hours for the fur ruff on my hood to dry out.) That was the day when the temperature started in the 60s F and ended up feeling like the 20s by nightfall. I'm visible in the reflection in some of those window shots.

You can see the 11 window display photos and 22 cemetery photos at my Flickr.

I drove about 15 miles to grocery shop in Westbury only to have Whole Foods and Trader Joe's not have the things I came for, so I trekked a little further away to Jericho and Plainview. The Plainview Trader Joe's is so much nicer and has a better selection than the ones I usually go to. It also played Depeche Mode's "Behind the Wheel" and Howard Jones' "Life in One Day" while I was there, which gives it extra credit.

House of Pain's "Jump Around" always gets me bouncing, but Pitbull and Lil John's "Jumpin'" takes the sample and adds a lot more party and booty shaking. Every time "Jumpin'" plays while I'm driving, I'm dancing in my seat.

The state of triplet sweaters when last checked on was that I finished #1 (a traditional Guernsey using PetiteKnit's Storm pattern in navy blue dk-weight Norwegian wool Sandnes Peer Gynt). Then I took over #2 (a mariniere using PetiteKnit's Marseille pattern in yellow stripes on black in dk Drops Merino Extra Fine) from [personal profile] waxjism, who had already knitted the body, and knitted the hem ribbing and sleeves and the neck ribbing while Wax started #3 (a traditional cabled Aran in forest green heather Peer Gynt). Wax got halfway up the body of #3 before stalling out in the cold snap while I knitted a little bit on a pair wool shorts for myself before giving up knitting in the cold as well.

Nobody knitted for a month or so. But all that time I knew I was going to have to unravel the neck ribbing on #2 and redo it, because it came out too tight/small.

After I ran out of wool for the shorts the other day, I unwillingly went back to the sweater. Knitting in black wool is very annoying because it's difficult to see the individual stitches. Yesterday I unraveled the collar and started over, getting through 17 rounds out of a planned 21, before I realized it was still too small and started over again. The third try is now at 18/21.

I need to order more wool for the shorts and some more needles and sock yarn and sock blockers.

We still haven't replaced the kitchen faucet, either. I asked Wax what she thought about ordering it a week and a half ago, and she said she could pick it up on her way home from work, but this hasn't happened yet.

There's been a rant I have been meaning to turn into an essay for a while, but Ken White (Popehat) has done it better, so I direct you to his really well-written and referenced (though US-centric) article: The Fashionable Notion of 'Free Speech Culture' Is Justifying State Censorship, Ironically. Criticism. Is. Not. Censorship, and “Free speech culture” has a natural tendency to discount the speech rights and interests of people who criticize speech.

This is important in Europe too, not just in the US, because it's a deliberate, specific Russian infowar tactic to promote far right events at UK universities and claim censorship if anyone objects. A network based at [Cambridge] University and backed by Thiel, which it said was using the issue of free speech to “normalise white nationalism on UK campuses”. Neither Putin nor Thiel has anyone's freedom at heart, and they're all too successful at distracting people with a toddler-like notion of "freedom" where you get to say the naughty words without being told off.

Our beloved floofy bun, Rowan, passed away a week ago. He was ten years and four months old (the average lifespan of pet bunnies I saw quoted some places is 2-4 years, and 10 years is the expected upper limit for his type of bun) and was healthy, cheerful, friendly, and sweet his whole life; he died very suddenly at home, apparently of old age. I miss him - he was always more friendly and cuddly than Japp - but I'm glad he had a long, happy life.

Anxiolytic bugs me. Every time I look at it, I have to remember that it means "relieves anxiety" instead of "causes anxiety."

I suppose you could say it makes my temper [in]flammable.

This post brought to you by learning that someone I know has recently been prescribed Cymbalta without any of the "Quitting this might suck beyond the telling of it" warnings.

Due to migraines and ridiculous allergies lately, I've been sleeping much more and haven't been online or writing as much. Pair that with how I wasn't going anywhere as much due to all the snow sticking around and making parking less reliable, I have less new stuff to talk about.

Even with higher temperatures and a lot of rain, we still have some mounds of the stuff, but parking is getting easier to find.

It's Irish soda bread season in NY. The Stop & Shop version, heretically, didn't have caraway seeds, but Trader Joe's did, even if I cringe at them calling theirs the Blarney Scone.

I had my annual eye exam last week, something especially important for someone with Chiari, which means they're very concerned with how my retinas are doing. For some reason, the pupil of my left eye stayed dilated hours longer than my right. They can't have put that much more dilating fluid in my left eye. My youngest niece saw it when I picked her up from college and was very concerned for me.

I received a notice from Kia of a recall for my Forte. It said they first sent a notice for it to the original owner in 2021 but nothing was done. So, I got this voluntary emissions and transmission recall done as well as two anti-theft things for free. The Kia service people seemed decent and competent, unlike all of the Hyundai people I used to deal with.

The UTI was the cause after all, but they had to try different medications before they got an effective one, which is apparently why he had a couple of partial relapses. He got to go home for dinner Friday, though.

Wax had the shift that lasted until 7 pm yesterday, and she had to work today and was too tired to go grocery shopping, so tomorrow will be ruined too by knowing we have to leave the house. Tristana continues to complain any time I am with Sipuli up until about 4 pm. I am trying out alternate hours.

Now that it's been above freezing for a week, it's even above 15° in the coldest room in the house, and there have been sunbeams daily. I've swept under all kinds of furniture that we usually don't, and put away Mt. Laundry that has been covering the office daybed all winter, and scrubbed the kitchen cabinet doors, and checked on the bunny four or five times each day.

He seems to be doing well as a lone bunny, but I can't help being concerned about him. Tristana greets him, but they've never figured out how to play together like she did with Rowan. I keep trying to rearrange his bunny furniture to spark his interest and giving him enrichment boxes (a box that teabags come in filled with hay with some dried fruit and a used dry decaf teabag hidden in it: he's crazy for teabags). We ordered him one of those hay cubes, but it hasn't arrived yet. They haven't had one of those in a few years (we've mostly bought a series of hay tunnels more recently).
