Five things meme, Part III

For [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty, Five things Bart has learned the hard way.

1) There is, actually, such a thing as too much.
2) It's not that the real world doesn't have resets, it's just that they're not
consistent. You can never find one when you need it.
3) Not everything can be vibrated through, especially in Gotham.
4) Even if takes less than one tenth of a nanosecond? Some books still aren't
worth reading. And even if they take whole *minutes* to read? Some books are
still over too quickly.
5) "You can't do that!" is not a challenge.

For [livejournal.com profile] ficbyzee, Five universes Kon gets transported to, instead of dying.

1) There's something about the way Simon looks in the infirmary, white coat, smelling faintly of expensive aftershave and disinfectant, the way the overly bright light reflects off of glass containers of unknown chemicals and highly polished surgical instruments, that makes Kon want to lock the door behind them, pull Simon on to the hospital-corner sheets and?

River comes up behind him as he stands at the window outside the infirmary and watches Simon make minute alternations to a particular compound. She goes up on her toes, perfectly balanced. He meets the reflection of her eyes and mouths,
"What?" at her.

"Oedipus," she says, then laughs, and pushes him, fast and hard, into the
window.

2) "I shouldn't be here," Kon says. He can feel it, the falling pit in the stomach and a line flashes through his head. The centre cannot hold.

"Maybe not," Barry says. He grips Kon's shoulder, firmly, securely, and Kon feels himself speed up, every molecule, every freaking *quark* that makes up him, stick together. Centrifugal force holding it together or something, and he wishes that he'd actually listened in physics. Except he doubts physics makes any sense here, this is the speed-force, physics as mysticism or something. Barry smiles at him. He looks like Bart, like the Bart he could be, should be. "Better?"

Kon nods. "Yeah, I think." He shakes his head. It's like going through a wall with Bart, only more so.

"Good. Because we're not slowing down until we're damn sure--" and he says damn firmly, like it means something?-"damn sure we know you're going to get off somewhere safe."

3) Dean's talking to the cop, casual, easy. Little bit of a flirt in it, not enough to imply he's viewing her as anything less than professional, but enough that she should look the other way on the ticket. Then, halfway through her warning on the dangers of speeding on twisty mountain roads, he feels something on his crotch. He stops himself from looking down, because he knows damn well nothing's going to be there, and tries to concentrate on the job at--
Fuck! He covers up his sudden jerk with a cough, says, "Excuse me, ma'am." And turns around to glare at the passenger seat.

Sam holds his hands up. "What?" he says.

"Don't," Dean snaps. Holds up one finger in warning, and turns back to the cop. She's giving him an amused look, something in her face switching from the maybe-interest before to a hint of maternal.

"You boys drive safely," she says.

Dean pulls out on to the street and braces himself, because sure as rain on a graveyard surveillance, Sam gooses him just as he goes past the car and looks disappointed when Dean fails to swerve. Dean see's Sammy's eyes narrow in the mirror.

"Don't even think about it," he says. Sam rolls his eyes, then grins.

"You gotta admit, I'm getting better."

"I am never letting you talk to strangers again," Dean says. "You're too easily influenced."

Sam nods. "Psych 101 tells me that it's the lack of strong male role models in my life."

"You know this sense of humour you've picked up? You might want to go back to the store, see if you can get a refund on it."

Sam laughs at him and leans his head back. And it's not like Dean didn't want Sam to lighten up, but when he put the word out for someone to help train Sam in his telekinis, he was picturing someone a little more Yoda. More lifting spaceships, less invisible groping.

The freaky kid claims to be alien, but Dean recognizes 100% male teenage hormones when he sees them.

4) It's not right. Nothing about it is exactly right. The colours are all different, off by a few shades. People are different. Kon would bet even the physics is different here, not in equations, but in outcome.

He lets go of Robin's hands and watches him tuck in, somersaulting through the air and landing perfectly on the roof. Robin lets out a yell at Kon, or possibly the world in general. "That? That is so much better than taking the bus."

Kon drops down next to him and crosses his arms. The uniform he's wearing was a gift from this world's Superman, a product of kryptonian technology, rather than Cadmus's finest. This world's Clark came up with the design on his own, and Kon tries not to think about what the fact that it's almost identical to his first one means. "Better than the batmobile?" he asks, floating next to him.

Robin... Tim, even if the way that he's the same is freakier than the ways he's different, looks at him and grins. "Depends who's driving," he says.

5) There's no real issue when Kon turns on Atlantis, just a lot of medical tests, physicist having melt-downs over his TTK and the odd grumbling comment of, "Why does Shepherd always get the pretty aliens?"

Thanks!

Kon on Atlantis... oh dear god, Ford with superpowers and a major hormone rush. Plus the scientists rather like the fact that he's had the 'do not disturb the experiment' trained into him by Tim.

Awww, Barry!

You know, I was trying to get some Ronon and Kon or John and Kon or Teyla and Kon in there, and it just wasn't working. It wasn't until after I posted that I realised it was because, in my heart of hearts, even though the rule of Big and Pretty is strong, really, it'd be Kon/Zelenka. No, I don't know why either, just that it's true.

eee! Kon in Atlantis = win. :D

Doing his little bit to take the bastard offspring of Legolas and a lamprey seriously as a threat.

Thank you for sharing. I like these as sort of glimpses of stories that could be.

[identity profile] jamjar.livejournal.com 2006-09-03 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Stories that I'd like to exist, but will never write.

That's ok, just by those sentences or paragraphs, plus the shared knowlege of the fictional universe... well it's sort of like the writer set the stage and the rest of it unfolds in the reader's head.

I like #4 the best. It's a sad, sad moment of realization, Bart, but better you should know.

I was in the mood for some Bart!Love, and knew I could count on you.

4 is one of those little tragedies that they never warn you about, going in.

Bart's made me wibble, but your Bart generally does.

As did Barry.

As did toonTim. Your brain makes me happy.

Call me old-fashioned and silver-age, but I believe anything can be made better by the addition of Barry.
