Blackberries, shiny things and five-things meme

Mmm, blackberries. I braved stinging nettles and brambles to bring home significant amounts of blackberries from Nunhead Cemetery yesterday, in the company of [livejournal.com profile] interlock and her husband. Blackberrying is so nice to do with people, especially when the blackberries are plentiful, the company is good and the weather holds out. Nunhead Cemetary was as nice as ever, and I managed to show off some of my favourite graves, including the one for the guy who was, "Loving Father, Labour Leader, Elizabethan Orator: To whom the Nation Owes Old Age Pensions."

Also, quite a few of the graves have a symbol on that looks like an S, with three parallel lines running through it vertically (a bit like a dollar sign), the middle one slightly longer than the others. The middle line sometimes goes up into a cross. Bonus points for anyone who can tell me what this symbol stands for.

Mmm, shiny things for sale.
In between knitting, I sometimes make shiny stitchmarkers, like those here and here. They're for sale,a nd I also take commissions. A set of 4 is £5 each, which includes postage and packaging. On request, I can include a pair of hooks to convert to earrings. Most of them are good for up to 6mm needles, though I can put them on larger or smaller rings as requested.

Mmm, five things meme. I'm sure you know the drill, but just in case: Give me the title of a list, and I'll fill in the five things. all my fandoms I've ever written, read, offered for a meme ro mentioned are fair game.

Doesn't that symbol mean something like the person was a smuggler or something? I had to do piece on graves at a cemetery on the Isle of Wight in Junior school, and I drew a really cool picture of a grave, i'm just not sure if i'm remembering it correctly. Damn it, now i'm gonna have to go up in the loft to find it!

I have an idea that the three lines are father, son and holy ghost related but I can't remember what the S stood for. I'm pretty sure it may be latin related. Possibly Sanctus. I'm not sure.

in the process of having a quick poke about for S-symbols, I find myself wondering - is the compas and widget atheists without the G and only Freemasons *with* the G, or was that a depressed freemason?

I reckon it's probably athiests without the G. I think in the states, on War Memorials, athiests get the Bohr atom (christians get a cross and so on). There was a bit of fuss recently, when they refused to do a pentagram for a pagan soldier.

It's been ages since I've been blackberrying. Ah, nostalgia.
