[profile] afrai's birthday fic, take 2

Birthday fic for Afrai
Genderbender
Diana Wynne Jones
Chronicles of Chrestomanci

Warning, here be het of the het variety.

Also, the biggest difficulty with genderbender fic is choosing pronouns.

ETA a probably futile attempt at clarifying the pronoun issue

“In retrospect,” Chrestomanci said, “we probably should have waited a few years before putting Cat in the same room as Tonino and Angelica.”

“Adolescence is a very confusing time, love,’ Millie said, looking at her husband’s back as he took off one of his dressing-gowns.  The lion and dragon patterned silk was slightly too big and was already sliding down one shoulder.  The matching pyjamas underneath did the same.  Millie sighed, a little regretfully.  One of the main inconveniences in her marriage was that her husband could be called away at any time.  It left casual nudity in short supply, which was a decided shame.

“Hmm.  And knowing Cat, I really shouldn’t be surprised that he spread that confusion around.”  A smile, and the smile was the surprisingly sharp Christopher smile, the one that only came out when he wasn’t concentrating on something work related.

Millie looked at his hand and idly started to undo the cufflinks.  Really, it was the small differences that were the most surprising.  This hand, her hand, was bigger, now.  It felt large and slightly clumsy on the pretty mother-of-pearl cufflinks lifted from her husband’s dresser that morning.  Millie had spent most of her life feeling large and slightly clumsy, and it was disappointing, though not surprisingly, to find this was still the case when it was (temporarily at least) his life.

It was equally unsurprising to find out that when her husband was (arguably, technically and temporarily) his wife, Christopher was still very beautiful.

It wasn’t something Millie noticed much, although she was sometimes aware of other’s noticing it.  She’d known him to long to be affected by his looks on a daily basis.  There were odd moments when she looked at him and it took her breath away, but he told her that he felt the same sometimes, which would imply that it wasn’t the sort of thing caused by looks, so much as love.  Still, she did like looking at him sometimes.

The lovely angles of (currently) her face.  The sharp, close-mouthed Christopher smile.  Even, surprisingly the curve out at the hip, in at the waist and out again for breasts that Millie guessed would hit nicely into his hand.  Or her hand.  No, his hand. Millie frowned. The male hand that he , Millie, was in possession of. As opposed to the female hand that the female Christopher had. Not that being turned into a woman made Christopher any less of man; only that since Christopher was doing such a nice job of being female, Millie would bestow the use of the female pronoun on him. Her.

Christopher caught his look and looked down at her chest.  She slid one hand into the half unbuttoned pyjama top and opened it a little, cupping her breast.  She sighed.  “Millie, you don’t think I’m a little- flat do you?”

Millie laughed.  “I think it’s unfair that you’re still taller than me.”

“Not by much.”  Christopher looked up, her hand still in her top.  “And I do think my shirt looks nice on you.”  They shared a long look, and then wore identical distracted expressions as they registered the different ways their body reacted.

“We do need to turn everybody back,” Millie said regretfully.  “We were lucky you managed to stop it before it spread further than the village.”  He flopped back on the bed.  “I’m surprised we haven’t had the usual mob breaking down the door.”

“I think they’re getting a little jaded,” Christopher said.  “Certainly, prolonged exposure to Cat’s little adventures has made them a little more resistant to shock.  Besides, I dare say they’re keeping themselves occupied.”

Millie lifted his head and looked at her.  That tone was familiar, even f the pitch was higher than she was used to.  Christopher smiled.  “Not that I’m suggesting we neglect our responsibilities,” she said.

“Not for a moment,” Millie agreed.  “On the other hand, it would be a shame to go back before we—oh!”

“Hmm?” Christopher said, dark hair still in a boyish cut, falling over eyes that shone with a particularly female mischievousness as she looked down from her perch on top of Millie.  Long, nimble fingers finished unbuttoning her oversized pyjama top before moving down to do the same to Millie’s borrowed shirt.

“Before we go back to normal,” Millie continued.  “Here, why don’t you let me…”  And her fingers might feel larger and clumsier, but they felt no less right on Christopher’s skin.  And Christopher certainly seemed to appreciate them.

“Mmm.  Thank you, my dear.”

“Besides,” Millie said, spreading her hands and marvelling at the way they fit so nicely on the curve of Christopher’s hips.  “It’s probably a good experience for everyone.  A change is as good as a rest.”

“Our motives are pure, or so I’ll solemnly swear when the papers call.”  A slightly roll forwards, enough to make Millie gasp and Christopher hiss appreciatively.  “Although I don’t think it’ll do much to help the children’s confusion.”

“Adolescents, love,” Millie said, shrugging out of his shirt.   “They’re meant to be confused.”

End.

married!love rocks.

Was the pronoun issue confusing- the Eight Days of Luke fic was a lot more simple, since it was only one switch, and David was still thinking of himself as a him, just one in a girl body.

like everyone who has ever written slash, sometimes I look at my fic and think "dammit, English needs more pronouns!"

The pronouns did get a bit confusing -- you know, with Millie first thinking of herself still as female and of Christopher as male, and then suddenly jumping to perceiving Christopher as female. That could have been put a bit more clearly. But I think the fic was done really well, all in all. Christopher and Millie's nonchalance! And Tonino and Cat and Angelica! <3.

I came back and re-read this and see I never said how good I thought it was when I first <3'd it.

It's very good.
