My entire household is flailing, giggling, flailing, it’s all exclaimation marks and vindictive, gleeful looking at where the tories lost, wiith only a brief interlude to explain to barely-awake Housemate Two what a hung parliament and three line whip means.

There’s a lot, and I don’t know what it’ll all mean tomorrow, but this is just-- like, the last few elections have been so awful, and this one, I was expecting to be... well, not quite as destructive as 2015, but close. And it isn’t! And I’m in, and from, one of the safest Labour seats in the country, so safe Labour didn’t even bother campaigning here, and we still went up in votes! And the tories lost, like, Cantabury and South Portsmouth and places where they’ve been for *longer than the labour part has existed* - like, over a hundred years, they’ve held them! But not anymore!

Yuletide reveal

Technically, one that I got in for Yuletide and one that I scraped into Yuletide madness-- as in, I literally posted it 2 minutes before the deadline.

I got matched on two Diana Wynne Jones books, Archer's Goon, which is one of my favourite books, ever.

Writing Notes: I sort of knew what I wanted to write, though not the exact details of the sections.

World Enough, and Time by jamjar

(5408 words)

Fandom: Archer's Goon - Diana Wynne Jones

Rating: Gen

Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

Characters: Erskine, Awful Sykes, Howard Sykes, Hathaway (Archer's Goon), Torquil (Archer's Goon)

Summary: The journey of a thousand miles (starts with sending your siblings to Alpha Centauri).

I also got matched on Fire And Hemlock, also by Diana Wynne Jones. One of the good things about yuletide is the excuse it gives you to go back and re-read something you haven't read in ages, remembering what you loved about it and finding whole new things to love (ask me about my new Polly headcanon!)

Writing Notes: Hah! One of those fic where you write bits -odd paragraphs, disconnected sections- but nothing that really links. Until, of course, it's past the deadline of the thing you intended. I just barely (literally 2 minutes before the deadline) managed to submit to the Yuletide Madness archive so the recipient could get it anon, but I didn't have time to get it beta-read (may try and do that and at least get any typos fixed later).

Dear Yuletide

You should write what gives you joy, so take all the things below as hopefully helpful ficprompts, rather than any hard and fast rules. It helps me writing to have a lot of stuff to work from, but if that's not true for you, go ahead and write what works.

Dear Yuletide - away for the holidays

Dear Yuletide,

Just to say that I'll be away and internetless for the holidays, back in the new year.

Not rude, just absent!

In conclusion, Grimglass (and the associated town of Grimglass Without) may be worth a visit, but only a brief one. The chief concern of the locals is the weather and the price of fish, not necessarily in that order.

Away for the holidays!

I'm off til after Christmas. Dear yuletide (and anyone else that tries to get in touch), if I haven't commented yet, it's because I'm where the only words are on paper and the internet does not go.

Overheard over the holidays...

I'm at my parents for the holidays/Little Brother's (Ack! 20th!) birthday.

Little Brother: "It's not going to work. The candle can't stand up in the tart."

Mum: "It's a special candle, it's special beeswax--"

LB: "It's not the wax, it's the size!" *Looks at the lemon tart with the single beeswax candle sticking out the middle.* "It looks like a fertility symbol!"

Mum: "It's fine! Look, I don't even need to hold it up any more, it's staying up on its own."

LB: "I used to hate it when people corrected me when I spoke, but then I started doing it to other people and now it doesn't bother me."

Life has not been playing particularly fairly lately, so I'm a little bit late to the party, but there's still time. If you would like a Christmas/winter faire/seasonal holiday card (or a random postcard), please leave you address in the screened comments. If you have anything you specifically don't want on the card, let me know and I'll avoid it.

Secondly, London People, this weekend is the Winter Open Studios at Pullens Yards. 40 old and creaky workshops open their doors for the public, giving you a chance to buy (or at least ogle) their wares. The workshops vary a little, but there are 40+ artisan workers, which include (but are not limited to) gold and silversmiths, designer clothes makers, ceramics, photographers, painters, furniture, book publishers, printers and lute-makers. Yes, lute makers. I've seen the lutes. Also carpet makers, leather workers and random other things.

I've gone the past few years and plan on going again this year. It's usually pretty fun, a good place to Christmas shop for stuff you won't find elsewhere and even if you don't buy anything, it's still nice to have a wander.
